I mean. Android has a Linux kernel, it's based on open source more or less. Why they don't provide an alternative?
And I mean... Samsung.

Well an android phone isn't really Linux in the mindset of the masses, it's a phone/tablet system, and most people don't use Linux on their PCs.

Same with TomTom navigation devices.... Running on the Linux kernel, but only a bloody Windows or Mac application to update it.

Well, the reason is obvious, of course....

But one would expect them to give a little in return, to the open source community from which they benefited so much for themselves (i.e. the device OS). If only the most basic of apps....

There are so many Linux distros, that creating and maintaining applications, even only for main-stream ones, is a freaking nightmare. Imagine, having to constantly test across different kernel, compiler, libraries, xserver, toolkit, package, etc versions, just to cater to a really small fraction of users.

Linux users like to complain about the lack of third party verndors' support, but that's not going to improve, uless distros start collaborating.

Sad... but true. Even though Linux offers so many choices, this is also I guess a weakness from the perspective of a company that develops software...

A cross-distro .tar.gz that I can compile for Ubuntu myself, or even a .bin app that runs on everything?
