If you let us know which version you are trying to download then someone can post the exact link you need.

    *cough*
/me spells out step by step for getting a free copy of recent desktop versions, while safely ignoring request for money:
    1. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
    2. Choose the version you want, 32 bit or 64 bit, 12.04 or 12.10
    3. Click on the "Get Ubuntu xx.xx"
    4. Go down the page, and click on "Not now, take me to the download"
    5. Choose "Save to disk"
    6. Wait patiently for the download to complete, visiting other web pages if you want.

I for instance went to the American server to download and the South African car insurance advert pops up first again and blocks everything.
I do not see the South African Car Insurance, and I would guess no one else in this thread does too. Therefore, it's possible that either your ISP is inserting the ads or that your browser has been hijacked. Or... have you tried adding the car ad website domain to your adblock filter list?

This thought occurred to me too.

What are you using to try and download, i.e. which OS and which browser?

They probably made a deal with our national telephone service provider, which will not be surprising. Sounds like a fairy tale of some sort, I'm just hoping there is a time limit attached as if I am right, there is most certainly money involved and sure to stop somewhere.
    Will keep you posted.
    Thanks
so you tried post #3 and you got insurance ads ? I highly doubt it as that doesnt involve a browser
