How do I find and install an MTP USB driver so I can work with my Kindle Fire and my computer (Ubuntu 12.04)? Thanks in advance.

Both USB and MTP are already supported in Ubuntu. You may need to add the libmtp or similar package, but you probably don't need a kernel module (driver).

Is it necessary? Have you tried to access your Kindle Fire without installing the driver?
I installed gMTP on 12.10 & had no issues at all.
I also have no issue with gMTP on Xubuntu 12.04.
Connect the Kindle & turn it on, then fire up gMTP & click connect.
