Arch linux wireless and EeePC 701

    Well here i go...

I have an EeePC 701 4 gigs of SD, 512 RAM I want to install a veru}y minimalistc distro on it so it acts as a torrent slave and DLNS (is that how you Spell it?) server. I want it to be connected to an external USB HDD I have hanging around. I will use rtorrent.

Now I installed arch linux, ehich has all what I need for such setup. but... I Cannot get wireless to work, I have everything up to date, installed kerneleee (march 2012 I think, the last one currently). blacklisted ath5k undone it, installed madwifi-svn, etc etc etc.

Have checked all the solutions in the forums (this one, and arch), without luck...

Wicd and wifi-menu detect my network, bit it stays for a while validating authentication, and does not connect at all.

If I use ath_pci it simply won't detect my wireless.

I cannot use wired internet for what I need.

Please help me, I am stuck!

Given that no fix is available, can you suggest any distro that runs smoothly or that can be easily installed in this device? (tried with debianm but it did not work, the install froze!)

Lubuntu and Puppy Lucid/Precise should work. Actually most of relatively recent Puppies (from 4.3.1 on) work and run pretty fast.
That's my play toy for distro hopping.

While I use Peppermint3 on my eeePC701 on a regular basis it sounds to me that you should try Slitaz, very small install but wireless and USB broadband virtually OTB. Slitaz is an excellent OS to modify because of the tools and help available. It works in RAM so is very fast, even on 512MB

Re: Arch linux wireless and EeePC 701

I have never had much luck with Arch and wireless cards. I have it running on one machine that is hardwired into my router. Arch seems like it would require too much time for upkeep for me to use seriously. I don't even think I've used that Desktop since I've installed it.

I would suggest Lubuntu, like a few other people have. It should offer support enough to get you running, as well as having the spectacular Wireless support that I have found in Ubuntu.
