After suffering evolution crashes which are unreportable due to lack of memory I'm going with thunderbird as it's the default now. I've got google calendar sorted and the email set up wizard is a dream. But when will these calendar events link into the gnome calendar. Currently one way is to install evo and set up google calendar. Bit of an odd workaround.

Anyone got a view on this?
I read that the event indicator is hard-coded to work with Evolution, and the work on integration with Thunderbird has yet to be completed. So the only way around this currently is, like you said, to set up Google Calendar in Thunderbird. I have also found this, but it also depends on Evolution Data Server. Haven't tried it though.
What calendar are you using for Thunderbird? Lightning?
