Why is Ubuntu so slow for me?

So I just recently downloaded Ubuntu. I split my HDD in half for Ubuntu and XP. Ubuntu was decent in the first few minutes then didn't work for ****. The cursor lagged everywhere and any program took minutes to open and even longer to respond to anything I clicked. I don't know if it was all the updates it did or if I did something wrong. XP still works fine so I'm unsure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Whats you computer spec's?

May need something lighter like xubuntu.

How much ram? Your box could have as little as 256M.

If not sure open a terminal (ctrl + alt + t) and enter:

free

Sorry, but not enough for Ubuntu. It will run on that, but as you found out, its slow. Ram is cheap, maybe buy some more.

Mean while Xubuntu will run fine on 512M. I suggest giving it a try.

Xubuntu 12.04 has long term support (3 years).
