If you use the Ubuntu 12.10 then the PPA not needed as Ubuntu 12.10 has the 2.20 intel driver by default. You can follow only the steps for the SNA AccelMethod.
The PPA will upgrade you card driver to the latest. Also you have another option if you upgrade the driver.
You have the option to test the SNA acceleration. The new driver Intel 2.20 supports SNA acceleration.
So , first upgrade your Intel driver with these commands
Then add SNA acceleration with the two commands below
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Create the folder
Create the file 20-intel.conf and add the appropriate lines.
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
Now , hit CTRL+ALT+F2 and login with username & password and execute the commands below
echo -e 'Section "Device"\n Identifier "Card0"\n Driver "Intel"\n Option "AccelMethod" "sna"\nEndSection' | sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Above commands will stop and start the X-sever , and you will see the changes.
sudo service lightdm stop
sudo service lightdm start
You can test if SNA acceleration is enabled with the command
the results should be something like below
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i sna
In case of a problem
(**) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
(II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Ironlake backend
Now , if you have any problem with the graphics - or and acceleration method.
Remove the file 20-intel.conf to revert back to the UXA acceleration method
Restart X (commands are above) or reboot.
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
If you have a problem with the new driver , remove the PPA properly with below commands
Reboot for changes to take effect.
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:glasen/intel-driver
sudo apt-get update
