Angry Ubuntu 12:10 - Unable to start X with Radeon X1250 card

    Hi,

My system was working fine till today morning, when I decided to re-boot it after some of the kernel upgrades were applied. On re-booting, instead of going straight into LightDM, it went to the login screen instead. In trying to fix this, I removed, installed, removed, installed a number of drivers from fglrx to nvidia and have now screwed up the install even further. The system is now no longer even showing the login prompt on startup... it is just stuck on the boot sequeunce.

However, I can ssh into the machine and I still think the problem lies with the graphics drivers and X configuration. The current state is that I have uninstalled all nvidia drivers as well as proprietary catalyst/fglrx drivers and re-installed some of the x-server-core packages.

Can someone please help me with getting the system back up and running. Some information that might help in troubleshooting this:

Re: Ubuntu 12:10 - Unable to start X with Radeon X1250 card

Looks to be an issue with lightdm:
    Code:
init: lightdm main process (1158) terminated with status 1
If you can ssh into the box, I would try installing another DM.

I have the same X1250 card as you.
You cannot use the propriety driver from ATI/AMD it does not support Xorg beyond 7.4
See screenshot for my current working setup.

I think we are on the right track here. I uninstalled lightdm, which meant it defaulted to gdm.

Now, on startup, a blank blue screen with a small black terminal on the top left hand side starts up.

Looking at the lightdm logs, I can see the following:

The only error I can see is that it looks like the session greeter seems to be missing.
