    Make a Better Ubuntu

I like Ubuntu, it's a really great OS but to be honest compared to Windows or Mac OSX it's not as polished.
That's why I made a list of "small things" that can be improved like :

    - An easy way to format usb drive like Linux Mint did with Mint Stick
    - Fix the bug of "install / reinstall wipe out all other partition" (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source...y/+bug/1265192
    )
    - Watch a movie on TV at 23.976hz without audio / video desync (https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1345770)
    - Window menu disappears from time to time (https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1353775)
    - An easy way to empty the trash of a usb drive when you unmount it because Ubuntu 14.04 no longer don't ask “Do you want to empty the trash” when you unmount it (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...s/+bug/1356871)
    - Compiz wrong refresh rate auto detectection (50hz instead of 60hz) with Nvidia proprietary driver (https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1345771)
    - When you install Ubuntu and you just select a partition, the installer uselessly want to resize the partition
    - Allow changing display frequency from display settings. Usefull to watch a movie at 23.976hz or 25hz for example.

A lots of things will change when Ubuntu will move to Unity 8 but it will take some time (arround april 2016 ?) and I don't want the same problems affect again Ubuntu.
So I think we should centralize some requests because many bugs reports fall into oblivion without being treated.
You can make a request on this thread and I will add the most populars.

Maybe if we make enough noise they will fix theses little annoying things and everybody will enjoy a even better Ubuntu !

I really want to see my favorite OS get better so I try this. If you have a better idea to help improve Ubuntu, let us know !

Well, I think Canonical is the right place to start complaining.

    We are Canonical
It is our mission to make open source software available to people everywhere.
We believe the best way to fuel innovation, is to give the innovators the technology they need.

To be fair, Canonical doesn't have the same ressources as Microsoft corporation or Apple. Still, In my view, Ubuntu 14.04 has nothing to be ashamed of Windows 8.1. As Unity becomes more mature, as Canonical finds new partnerships and enter new market, Ubuntu is going to get even better. It looks promising.

Totally agree! I wish there was a simple right-click ''format'' option. Now at this point we have to use the ''Disk Utility'' app shipped as default in Ubuntu or go for third party ''Gparted''. Hopefully, it will be more convenient in futur releases.

Like I say "an easy way". To use gparted :
    1. you have to know the soft exist
    2. you have to install it
    3. you have to know how use it and what it does
    ...

A right clic -> format is a lot simple. For what it's worth, I installed Ubuntu in dualboot with Windows on my father and brother PC and they think Ubuntu can't format USB drive. So they reboot to windows to do this...

Has you can see here it's not as simple : http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/08/u...pes-partitions

For a lot of problems there is a workaround but the point is improve Ubuntu. It's never pleasant to spend time to do something that is supposed to be simple

I agree Ubuntu 14.04 is a really goos OS, I never say the contrary but I say "small things that can be improved".
With a little polish Ubuntu can be very good

    Hello!

You do know how many employees Canonical has, how many of them are developers, how much Canonical makes on every installation and how much revenue Canonical brings in annually, right?

I'm sure the offer of your elbow and a soft cloth would be welcome.

There used to be, then it was gone because of changes in gnome. Now I use gparted.

I have no idea. I only have read that Canonical don't make a lot a profit... That's why I propose only little things to improve.

The OS is free and I respect the great work of the devs. I make a donation on the download page. And now I spend time to figure out what small things can be improved for the good of all.

Linux Mint made a little soft "Mint Stick" (link for ubuntu 14.04) to simplify usb drive formating but it's not available in Ubuntu repos...
