I'm not too sure about gnome 3/unity, but previously in gnome 2 there was an icon on the panel that minimised all open windows, or you could use Ctrl+Alt+D.

    EDIT:
I've just searched and it seems that Ctrl+Alt+D is still the answer. No idea about the panel icon in 12.04.

What I've done in the past is simply find the program or file and drag/drop it over...it seemed to work ok.

Is it a shortcut to a file or a specific program you want as an icon on your screen?

You can install myunity as described in this link and turn on "Show Desktop" button.

Hi, You can also use "CompizConfig Settings Manager" to do this. It's available from the Ubuntu Software Centre.

In saying that, the option to do this is listed under Experimental!

MyUnity as previously mentioned is probably a better idea...
