    Installing from USB stick

Hi everyone, please don't hassle me too much - I have no idea what I'm doing.

I have a little netbook that got so full of Windows files and crap that it took a week to check for new emails. I want to blow the whole thing away and put Ubuntu on it because I have never used the operating system and would be keen to try.

I have a Mac that I am using right now to post this and to download the .iso and so on.

I want to create a boot stick on my Mac that will be booted on the netbook and will self install Ubuntu.

I can only find tutorials that allow a stick to be created on the device you want to change the OS on.

I'm really new to all of this and I'm having problems finding the right information. A link, or suggestion or even a finger pointed in the right direction would be great. I tried doing it myself already and just managed to get really lost.

Thanks in advance for ANY help what so ever.

    Keith

It is fine, do not worry. If you use UNnetbootin, it should get the job done, all that matters is that it will work on your hardware, not really a matter of software. So just make sure you get the iso for your architecture. There are things for it it on Mac. (codes to use in the terminal and such, do not worry, just read closely, or wait a small time, and someone will give you a list of GUIs I am sure to help you.)

    1. Create bootable USB: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/...th-unetbootin/ You may need to format your usb stick first in "slow speed", so to make sure it will work.

    Re: Installing from USB stick

You can create a bootable USB drive with either LiLi or UnetBootin (I've had success with both). After that insert the flash drive into the netbook USB port, select "boot menu" at startup (I think on my Acer netbook the hotkey is F12) and then you'll be able to try out the Ubuntu desktop without installing. There'll be an "Install" link on the desktop for when you're ready to install.
If Ubuntu runs too slow for you (it did for me) you could look at lighter alternatives such as Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or (my preference) Linux Mint XFCE edition.
    Good luck!

    Mac-specific instructions: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/deskt...ick-on-mac-osx

Remember, you'll need the x86 Intel image for your netbook, even if your Mac is a PowerPC.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Meilin - that was the best response!!

For anyone else in my shoes, I clicked on the first link below, made the USB stick, put it in my netbook and now I'm playing with Ubuntu.

That actually could not have been easier.

Thank you so much for the responses (all of them).
