Re: Absolute noob with no internet ready to throw my computer out the window

When I click on the network icon, it says "device not ready" under wireless networks.

My USB wifi adapter has a light but it is not on. There are no switches on it.

Buckie Ball and I have been discussing this in the back room and we're puzzled that both ethernet and wireless say:

Aside from that, everything looks very good. We are both wondering if there is either a setting in the BIOS that enables/disables these devices or an ACPI problem with the PCI slots.

Please check in the BIOS for any such settings. In many cases, resetting the BIOS to defaults resolves a lot of problems.

    Let's look for ACPI issues:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep -i -e warn -e error

Re: Absolute noob with no internet ready to throw my computer out the window

The code "grep -i -e warn -e error" did nothing. I have reset my BIOS to defaults and still no success. My computer is a Dell Dimension 9100, not sure if that matters or not but it can't hurt...

I assume it is the USB that we're trying to get going. The module r8192u_usb needs firmware and I'm a bit surprised it isn't installed by default. From modinfo:
    Code:
    $ modinfo r8192u_usb
    filename: /lib/modules/3.5.0-18-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8192u/r8192u_usb.ko

    firmware: RTL8192U/main.img

I have attached a zip file. Please download it and transfer it on a USB key or similar and drag and drop it to your desktop. Right-click and select Extract Here. Now open a terminal and do:
    Code:
    sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/RTL8192U
    sudo cp Desktop/RTL8192U/* /lib/firmware/RTL8192U
Insert the device. Is it working now?

Okay it says its connected but I can't load any web pages. Maybe it's a Firefox issue. I usually use chrome so I don't really know how to fix this. Any suggestions?

More information: It's not Firefox. My internet works in momentary lapses (I downloaded 8MB in 30 min in Ubuntu Software Center, I have cable internet).

Hmm, the plot thickens. When you right click the network icon and 'Edit Connections', do you have the settings correct in there? Correct security type (WPA, WEP etc), 'Connect Automatically' and 'Available to all users' is checked? If you are running a static IP do you perhaps need to put the DNS details in there, too (if you do then you would be connected to your network (LAN) but can't get to the outside world (WAN)?

If you have working wireless in Windows or on another machine you could perhaps compare the wireless details in that setup to the one in Ubuntu and see if you can notice any differences.

Good to hear there's progress. (Cheers Chili555)

I looked at all the settings and things seemed to match up pretty nicely so I just ran the update process and just kept reconnecting every time the connection froze up. I guess it helped because after the updates I am now running smoothly. Thanks everyone who helped!
