thinkpad_acpi: Invalid argument in quantal

Hi,

I am trying to get thinkfan working in ubuntu 12.10 (64-bit) on a thinkpad x120e. When trying to load thinkpad_acpi with

modprobe thinkpad_acpi

I get the following error:

FATAL: Error inserting thinkpad_acpi (/lib/modules/3.5.0-17-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.ko): Invalid argument

I have not been able to find this anywhere online... anyone have any suggestions? I also tried loading coretemp to no avail.

Am I right in assuming that you did

sudo modprobe thinkpad_acpi?

Can you post the output of lsmod?

Hmm... since it's complaining about an invalid argument but you aren't actually supplying any parameters on the command line I wonder if it's reading something bad from a conf file in /etc/modprobe.d? Do you get any hits if you

grep -R thinkpad_acpi /etc/modprobe.d/

I'm just thinking out loud here really - I don't really know anything about kernel modules OR acpi

Aha! your last post led me to an error.
In /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf I had inserted the line

options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1

following some how-to somewhere.

Adding the extra parameter "experimental=1" fixed it.

so... my /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf now reads

options thinkpad_acpi experimental=1 fan_control=1

Loading the module now works, and thinkfan also works.
