How to connect 2 ubuntu computers over internet?

    Hello everybody,

I have 12.10 and my friend has 12.04. No Windows, no Mac, no servers - just 2 regular Ubuntu machines behind routers by the same ISP.

We tried to use Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Viewer and we enabled "allow access", "allow control" etc but no luck so far.
There are tons of different answers on the Internet but they are either beyond my comprehension or just don't work.

I use Ubuntu as my main desktop already for years but my networking experience is very basic.
Is there a solid and comprehensive tutorial around how to connect Ubuntu 12.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 for full control of Ubuntu 12.04 machine?
I would highly appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

No but I could try, not sure about my friend, should it be done on both computers?
    Thanks.
