Help needed on old Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Server

I am quite puzzled up now-a-days my old old ubuntu 8.04 servers running apache2 in clustered environement are experiencing severe performance issues memory & CPU spikes sometimes losing connectivity with database. I have tried lot of thing which didnot help... Can someone point me toward right direction ..

Anything interesting in the varios logs in /var/log which might give anything useful?
In the odd chance this is hardware related next time you see this happening is there anything in dmesg?

There are no unusal in the logs ... dmeg, /var/log/messages & /var/log/syslog and even in apache logs I couldn,t find anything.. Certainly the server activity is in getting incresed day-day.
