Favorite music player that isn't an iPod?

I was thinking of getting an MP3 player. Apple seems to really restrict their devices, so I'd prefer to avoid iPods. I also want something that can handle any media file format.

So far, Creative Labs is a tempting alternative, since they make computer audio equipment. I've had my eye on the Creative Zen 32 GB player. It's been discontinued though, so would have to get it off Ebay.

    Any other suggestions?

Re: Favorite music player that isn't an iPod?

I have a Zen Vission W, that i love. had it for years, but now I need to replace it, because i can't find any decent software to administer it (add/remove tracks, edit playlists, etc) for ubuntu, and creative's software won;t work with my win7-64 installs. i haven't been able to add anything to it in like 6 months as a result.

so, Creative => good player; discontinued => get a current model.

I really like COWON music players. They support a large number of audio formats and work with any OS.

I cast a vote for the Sansa lines, like the Fuze & the Clip.
I have a Fuze, and it works well with Linux. It also has a SDHC card slot, so you can add up to 32GB of memory. RockBox is also installable on them, that's a big plus for me too. Most of all, they are relatively inexpensive.

If it's just for music then i'd also go for a Sansa Clip. They're very small and also cheap, and has a useful lcd display. Handles all major formats other than aac. They're very light, so dropping one is very probably not going to cause any damage at all.

I have a Sansa Clip+ and its pretty nice for such a tiny device. With its screen it puts the iPod shuffle to shame.

If you need a video plaing device there is the Sansa Fuse line.
I also think the Cowon line is pretty nice, too.

My Droid Incredible is also a very fun device to use but if you dont want your stuff on a phone I can see that as a problem.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling.
