Trouble installing on Sony Vaio pcg-r505jl

I am trying to repurpose my old Sony Vaio and am attempting to install the latest Ubuntu on it. I have run into a number of issues and have sneaked by them all so far, but am running into a snag now.

I have the minimalist install on a CD. It boots successfully from that to the Installer Boot Menu. When I select "Install" or "Command Line Install" it hangs indefinitely until I restart the machine. I was able to launch the expert install, but haven't done one before.

    Any ideas?

This is a seriously old computer. Please give a complete hardware description, especially the size of memory.

We might be able to get Lubuntu or Puppy Linux running, but Ubuntu is out of the question.

Thanks for the reply. I will look at the laptop later and post the details.
