installation of 12.10 as a dual boot with Windows

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 together with WinXP as dual boot.
I would like to to change to 12.10

    What do you recommend ?

    1) Install 12.10 alongside of 11.04 until confirmed that everything is OK and then delete 11.04 and increase the space for 12.10.

    2) Or delete 11.04 and install 12.10 directly ?
Is there a manual where the steps to do this are detailed ? I do not feel very safe as many of the terms used are not fully clear to me.

    3) At the same time, I would like to decrease the space used by Windows.

Do you have a recommedation in which order should I do what ?
Thank you, your help will make the re-install easier.

    Michael

    p.s.
Or should I do the ultimate re-install from
    Ubuntu 11.04 / Win XP
    to
    Ubuntu 12.10 / Win 8

If you haven't already done, I would suggest that you first try 12.10 as a liveCD. This way you can check the basic things without any installtion. As you might know, 12.10 causes quite some problems, so may I ask why you want to install 12.10 instead of 12.04 LTS?

I tried the DVD, I seemed to have no problems - but I am not sure about the details of the problems you mention. I might have overseen it. ??

Why 12.10? No special reason, apart from 12.10 being the newest version. Nevertheless, I am just downloading 12.04; with that one the life of my PC would be covered.
