    Sorry about that! I forgot to disable power management before outputting iwconfig. I did turn it off after and I was still experiencing the same problems. As I saw no clear evidence that power management disabled was helping, as I got same results when I tried with it on and off, I didn't permanently disable it yet.

    However, the problem still persists. The following wireless_script file was generated with the following settings:
    nohwcrypt = 1, power management = off, IPv6 ignored.

    Hmm.. nothing seems wrong in there to my 'inexperienced' eyes. So before I go asking for help from someone else, one more answer please -
    Have you tried saving the correct pass-phrase and encryption type in the Network Manager permanently ? It shouldn't ask you for pass-phrase then. If not, please try that this time and post back if it makes any difference or not.

    All encryption and password settings are correct. I have checked many times but it still asks for username and password many times. Looking at the logs, it doesn't say authentication rejected, just timed out, so not sure.

    Yes. When it works it works without asking for username and password so I know they are setup correctly. Only when it fails to connect will it ask for them again as the fields are already filled in.

    First of all, please double-check the /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf file. Make sure it says exactly:

    If it is any different, please correct it.

    What I strongly suspect is that we have here is a classic example of Network Manager's glaring weakness. When there are several ESSIDs with the same name and reasonable strength, as here:

    A fix that has helped in the past is to specify the MAC address of the strongest nearby access point, thereby informing NM that we want one and only one SSID named UofT.

    I suggest you do:

    Just out of curiosity -
    Although I was totally unaware about that behaviour of NM and also overlooked the parts you highlighted, I was tempted to suggest the OP to switch to wicd, as I have seen many posts that suggest it is often better than NM in such weird authentication issues. Do you think it is a fact in any particular situation ? Or just coincidences? Because the posts I'm referring to were often posted by the OPs who said their problem was solved by switching to it.

    I was waiting for your input before suggesting that because I found no logical explanation to that.

    I think there is a pretty good chance that Wicd would perform better. However, I'd try specifying the MAC in NM first.
    If multiple connections are stored with different MAC IDs in above manner, would NM switch automatically to the next best one if the person moves too far away from the current access point ?
    Probably not and I wouldn't try. I'd try to get a setting for, for example, dorm and leave it at that. He already gets service in the lab.

    He might be able to set up two or three, dorm, cafeteria, someotherplace, etc., but I don't know for sure since I have no such situation to experiment with.

    What's going to show up in the NM icon is, nevertheless, what scan and nm-tool show: UofT, euroroam, etc. He'll probably need to click the NM icon, edit connections and fiddle around a bit. It is one of the few remaining weaknesses in NM. It's great for me and Mrs. Chili on her computer; there is but one SSID with a name she recognizes, not 327! She clicks and connects the first time and it works seamlessly thereafter.

    I watched this thread unfold here and suspected that duplicate SSIDs were a probable issue. I also wondered how long I could hold myself back!
