Question gimp/darktable opencl video ram requirements

I'm using darktable and gimp to work on my photos, and my 512Mb gpu is kinda failing to keep up - every now and then it runs out of available memory and processing falls back to cpu which is of course a lot slower. So, now I'm looking at upgrading the gpu - but how much video ram do I need? Is 1Gb enough for most purposes? Because I could get a lot faster 1Gb card for the money I'd need to spend to get a 2Gb card.

got a 1Gb card, darktable seems okay with it when editing and exporting 10Mpx images.
