Duplicate Applications running at same time

I have not been able to open the same application twice at the same time. Am I doing something wrong? Have found it impossible to say have two copies of Nautilus open at the same time (to copy/paste/edit between two files). Have tried opening an empty Desktop but as soon as I click Home I'm returned to the Desktop I have already opened. Same happens with other applications Thanks OldPeter

Right-click the "Home Folder" icon and select "Open a New Window".

Use the middle click of the mouse. Or to use a single nautilus(home folder), click F3 to open the extra pane.

Or right click on the home folder icon and use the quicklist feature(it'll be a dropdown listing the folder such as documents downloads, etc, etc), It can be use multiple times, per folder you want.
