Hello everyone I'm new here to the forum but not very new to Linux, but it has been some years since I used it. I'm looking to dual boot My Win XP sp2 with Ubuntu 12.04 and I have some questions if I may.
System Info - Dell Inspirion e1405
2 gigs ram
1.60 ghz dual core processor
1 tb seagate momentous 5400 rpm hdd
My machine currently has Winxp installed on a separate 120 gig hdd. And I have dual booted before. Main questions I have deal with partitions and do's and dont's
My factory machine came with windows xp and a hidden dell resources partition. So what I would Like to do with the 1tb drive is create the following partitions for my install.
partition 1 - Win xp - NTFS
partition 2 - Ubuntu - EXT4
partition 3 - Random Linux install - Prob change it often
partition 4 - Shared ntfs storage for both os's to use
partition 5 - dell resources ( hidden )
partition 6 - Back-up drive for images of os's
Now this is where I'm confused - I have been doing some reading where people set up Linux with multiple partitions for " / " " /home " and " /root " I believe. Why is this done or what advantages are there to doing an install this way.
And for part 6 would this be correct syntax for using dd to create an .img file on my partition that I can use to restore an OS if some happens to my boot partitions.
sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc/ubuntu.img to create an image file of my install?
Tips, suggestions. How would you do an install like this? I'm pretty open to idea's , kinda have a plan but yours might be better. Thanks for taking time to read and post a reply.
