You sure? In terminal there is no visual verification that you are entering your password.

The terminal doesn't show any characters as you type in your password. Just type it in and press enter, and it should work.
If it really doesn't work, that means that your root password and your user password are different. They should be the same, if you installed Ubuntu normally.
Does the password that you use to log in yield "Sorry, please try again:" when using "sudo"?
yes it says try again Looks like the root pswd is some how wrong
when i type in no dts or anything. itb worked 2 days ago , Hmmmmm gremlins in my old laptop
sudo remove gremlins
If that doesn't work, reset password
like the others said.. there will be no characters displayed when you type in your password.. no asterisks (*****) dots or what ever.. It looks empty but it's not. Type password and hit enter, that should work..
If ubuntu 12.04 is to much for your system, why don't you try Xubuntu 12.04? I use it on my old laptop and it works just fine..
