Question Steam game crashing on start-up

Hello, just registered to see if anyone can help me with an issue I've been having. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 64bit a few days ago, and I have to say, I love it. The only thing that has been giving me an issue is Steam. Whenever I launch Portal 2, the game crashes at the first loading screen, before the main menu. I'm running it with the newest version of Wine, and haven't been able to find a solution on their site. The Steam client itself has been working fine, besides occasionally locking up. Sometimes after it crashes, Steam gives me an error message saying something like "Launch failed (Application running)". It doesn't always give an error message, sometimes it just crashes and doesn't react to it. I haven't tried any other games yet, I don't own any other ones. Anyone know a way to get the game running?

System specs below, in case that they would help find the cause of the problem:

    MSI H77MA-G43 Motherboard
    Radeon 7770 GPU
    Intel i5 2500 CPU
    8 GB of RAM

I only have Ubuntu installed on the hard drive, no other operating systems.

I'm running it with the newest version of Wine
Which version? If wine 1.5+ there are very very many problems with it.

Try playonlinux. It's a fancy application that sets wine and games up easily and installs things required to get the working automatically, and it has a script for portal 2 as well. Use the ubuntu .deb file from this website: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

PlayOnLinux is just a frontend to wine. So it uses wine with the necessary additional commands.

Yeah, its Wine 1.5... I installed PlayOnLinux, but the game is still crashing. Do I just have to have POL on my computer for it to work with Wine, or do I have to do something else with it first?

EDIT: nevermind, got an installation screen up....

Re: Steam game crashing on start-up

Verify the game cache. that can cause the game to crash at start up.

Right click on game/properties/local files/verify integrity of game cache. if you do that and it says a file was corrupted etc you found you're problem however it might lead into the stopping at 1% installed problem I'm stuck at.

The actual solution will be here in a few month (thank all that you find holy) when steam and the source engine are ported to Linux and you can run thees games nativity in Linux.
