    12.04 underreporting RAM

I'm running 12.04 (64 bit) on two different machines -- a Dell from about 2005 and a newer mac mini. The mini is configured to boot to Ubuntu or Mac OS. Both machines have 4GB of RAM and in both cases Ubuntu reports less -- 3.6 for the mini and 3.2 for the Dell. The Dell's BIOS reports 4GB as does the System Info report on the mini.

I'm still pretty new to linux and will appreciate any pointers or suggestions for "further research."

Here's a memifo report from the mini.

    3.6 sounds about right.

I have 8GB of RAM on my desktop, but it is reported as 7.8GB.
Read the answer in this post, he goes into detailing it pretty well.

Thanks for that reply - the post you linked to does a very clear job of explaining what's going on and it turns out to be a simple distinction. Ubuntu reports what's available after the system loads and not merely what's installed.
