    well well well

there are many reasons that many *nix DISTRO'S
have not moved away from compiz but I thought that linaro landed some stuff
    https://code.launchpad.net/linaro
    http://www.linaro.org/

also Unity-2d can run opengl opengles you can also write and fragmented gl code you want

There is no alternative for Unity, unfortunately. Unity is a Compiz plugin and without Compiz, that means no Unity. I seriously doubt anyone is up for the task of completely rewriting Unity and creating an alternate compositor manager.

Re: when will ubuntu move away from compiz ??

Thought the Phoronix links were fascinating. Had no idea Unity and KDE performed so poorly (though I was much less surprised by KDE's poor performance - KDE has always been sluggish on my systems). Have to admit, since I use XFCE, the Phoronix results were gratifying.

12.10 is still in Beta, but who knows whether any of the regressions will be mended. Unity is still a very new DE. I think it needs at least another two to three years.

That said, Unity is a very "bling" oriented DE, like KDE. I'm guessing that they're trying to appeal to the "mass market". I could be wrong, but it seems to me that distros like KDE and Unity spend way too much time and effort on bling, and too little on internals.

Well, Unity wasn't originally a Compiz plugin, it had to be rewritten as one. Canonical have already done it once, so it could be rewritten again if need be.

In fact there's Unity 2D, which isn't Compiz. Although it's be deprecated in 12.10 so won't be getting any new code.
