    Not impressed with unity

Please Ubuntu go back to using the normal gnome. I have used Ubuntu for four years and am seriously considering moving to mint primarily because of the user interface. Ubuntu Rocks but not with unity.

    Have you tried gnome-classic?

    sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

gnome2 has been abandoned by the gnome developers. sure it's been forked by the mate project but let's be honest how long will that last? heck you can even install both mate and cinnamon which are defaults in mint on ubuntu.
Whoever came up with the phrase "There is no such thing as a stupid question" obviously never had the internet.

To be honest I still love the fact that in previous versions I could o to a drop down menu, pick a category like 'graphics' and then see all the apps that are installed. It's just taking me a while to get used to the whole dashboard thing.

Then you might prefer XFCE or LXDE. You can get those separately or as part of the packages xubuntu-desktop and lubuntu-desktop.
