Wireless mouse freezes after a couple seconds, comes back once reconnected

My wireless mouse (logitech M310, but also another wireless mouse) freezes after a couple seconds of use. But the track pad on the laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad T420s) continues to work. Moving the mouse or clicking does not wake the thing up. Removing the little usb wireless "nano receiver" and plugging it back into the usb port brings the mouse back, but only for a few seconds.

Running kubuntu 12.04, but this also happened on 11.10. Continues to happen with xfce, so it might not be a kde thing. It doesn't matter if I'm plugged in, or on batter power. And I don't see anything new in dmesg after plugging the receiver in, or after the mouse dies.

Happened ever since I moved to my new apartment (!?) and starting to get pretty frustrating... Help?

Welcome to the forum! I know this may sound like a silly question but have you tried fresh batteries in the wireless mice that you are using? I was having the same issue with my mouse and a fresh set of Energizer bunnies and I was back up and hopping!!

I second that. My wireless mouse 'cuts out' when the battery is about to die. I'd try a new battery first of all.

Chances are if you turned the mouse off at the power button....waited 10 seconds....then turned the mouse back on....you would see that it "unfreezes" and in essence would be working the exact same as you unplugging the USB and plugging it back in.

    wowwww

I went out and got a fresh set of batteries... it's fine now.

I *know* I changed them while I was troubleshooting this! Must've just used old batteries, I guess.

Thanks for your responses! What a stupid first post!

Do not feel stupid at all....it's just like with anything else in life....try to troubleshoot the small, quick, easy and cheap things first. We were lucky that our first suggestion were correct. Do not hesitate to ask questions on the forum because I have found there are people with a ton of knowledge on here.

There has been many times I've been troubleshooting an issue and been completely stuck. I get a colleague to look and it turns out to be something really simple.

Sometimes you just can't see the wood for the trees and it takes a fresh pair of eyes to figure it out. Not a stupid post at all.
