Re: i need help connecting to internet please.

I found this on another post and believe this will work for you....
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-$(uname -r) linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms
    wget http://media.cdn.ubuntu-de.org/forum...92_dkms.tar.gz
    sudo tar xvf 2844083-rtl8192cu-3.3.23192_dkms.tar.gz -C /usr/src
    sudo dkms add -m rtl8192cu -v 3.3.23192
    sudo dkms build -m rtl8192cu -v 3.3.23192
    sudo dkms install -m rtl8192cu -v 3.3.23192
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/rc.local
Right above exit 0 add these two lines:
    Code:
    modprobe rtl8192cu
    Code:
     echo "0b05 17ab" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rtl8192cu/new_id
    Found the work around here

I do believe you need to be connected to the Internet to be able to get the updates/downloads.

Don't copy the word in blue--run--. The codes are only those in red.

And yes, updates are from the web. You must be connected.

Once you run the commands while connected to the Internet I believe will actually enable you to download the necessary drivers without having to use your CD. I will be gone for the majority of the day but will check in tonight. Good luck!

Re: i need help connecting to internet please.

Thanks guys, you guys are the best. Ubuntu is like hate-love, then love-hate relationship with me but i think i think the hate part is disappearing thanks to you guys for that.
Now, i may have tried to update twice where the first time worked but i will give all the codes since connected to the internet.
One more thing, the last part where i supposed to copy the two lines above the exit, well, they have "#" starting from the beginning, should i have added # in front of those two lines? I did not. I just followed instructions but just intuitive thoughts that i should ask after all i don't have all that knowledge on ubuntu yet.
    Once again, thank you.

    Sorry, try again.

Re: i need help connecting to internet please.

If you copy/paste, copy exactly. Those "#" hash marks mean the line is information for the user. It will not be used by terminal. That means they are 'commented out'. I don't know which lines you mean though. There are about four/five sections with ending exits--new logins.

    The last lines==
Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
I see this when I have another install directory open. Software Center, Synaptic or terminal. There can be only one running at a time. If you don't have another open, I don't know else it is.
