Ubuntu Upgrade and two hard drives question?

I'm hoping this is an easy yes answer, but I wanted to make sure before I start.

I currently have a computer built with two internal hard drives, it's running ubuntu 11.10. I want to move all of my files to the second hard drive (i'm not sure what the partition structure is on it,if any) disconnect that hard drive physically from the rest of the computer and then do a fresh install on the first hard drive.

If after doing that, when I reconnect the second hard drive, would it have any problem recognizing it (other than possible mounting issues)?

Are there any issues, that I am over looking?

Why would the answer be a "Yes"? There should not be any problems or issues, so "No".
That said, it sounds odd that you don't know what's on the second hdd. Hope there is enough space to hold the files.

Re: Ubuntu Upgrade and two hard drives question?

Ah good point. I think in the course of typing my response, I changed my initial question a bit?

Regardless, I do know what is on the hard drive currently (the files from last time I backed up my hard drive) I'm not sure how it was initially partitioned.

As for space, the two HDs are 1 terabyte each (they were on sale when I bought the computer) I'm sure that atleast this time I will have space for them.

But thank you for reaffirming my thoughts that it shouldn't be an issue.

There is no real reason to remove and then re-install the second hard drive when you install ubuntu if you choose "Something Else" at the disk preparation stage. That will show you all the partitions currently on both disks and allow you to choose what partitions to use/reuse/delete etc etc.

Just make sure you know which disk is which before you install and it should all go smoothly.

If going the route you're thinking of going, then I'd suggest rebooting before loading the LiveCD to make sure you've unplugged the right hard drive.
Other then that, sans chewing up the connector or filling them up with peanut butter, everything should work out fine.

Don't ask me how.. but somehow that happened. Kidding, no I did exactly what you mentioned. Unplugged, turned the computer back on checked to see if it was the right one, it was. Completed a fresh install of 12.04, plugged the hard drive back in and it recognized it just as I had hoped.

    Thanks guys.
