I make notes to myself to keep a record of tips and tricks for future reference. While I could do so in LibreOffice Writer, I prefer something simpler like gedit.
In gedit, if I go into View > Highlight > Markup and choose Markdown, I can use fairly simple means to **bold** or _italicise_ text, or to mark text as `code` or as an <URL>.
This is without adding any plug-in for gedit. What I want to know is whether there's a way just to see the effect and not the effect plus the means to achieve it. In other words, using bold as an example, if I bold something, it requires a flanking pair of asterisks: **these words are bold**. But is there a way not to see the asterisks and just have the bold effect? Is there a way to see just these words are bold and not **these words are bold**?
