You may need to boot into recovery mode to add your user to the sudo group
    Code:
    adduser paul sudo

Hi I'm having some difficulty booting into recovery mode, I press escape when after the BIOS loads but the machine continues on to the main login page. Do you have another suggestion?

OK so that was progress, I booted into recovery mode added the sudo group to my profile and ran apt get update as follows

    paul@paul-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
    [sudo] password for paul:
    Sorry, try again.

    Reading package lists... Done
    paul@paul-desktop:~$

I am still faced with the original problem when I run the update manager I get:

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Opening /etc/apt/sources.list - ifstream::ifstream (13: Permission denied), E:The list of sources could not be read.'

    Any suggestions welcome...

Like oldos2er said, or just rename and update:

    sudo mv sources.list sources.list.old

    and update

Re: Repository fails to update with 404 Error.

Well that seems to work a treat, I removed the Sources list file and am currently updating. I guess I manually added some updates into the repo with errors. Anyhow once these updates are complete I plan on updating the system to the new LTR... fingers crossed

Appreciate all the help and effort

Re: Repository fails to update with 404 Error.

I have the same message basically and yes my internet is working fine and I have two other computers which are updating just fine. The big difference in my laptop is I went from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04. Would that make a difference? I was considering overwriting with a copy I have of Ubuntu 12.04. Please help. My laptop says my package hasn't been updated in 19 days now
