10.04 nvidia install - blank screen for command line

    Hi,
trying to install the nvidia drivers and at the point where I need to disable the gdm, I lose the screen altogether (the screen is blank).

I can still switch back to GUI using Ctl-Alt-F7.

    QM67 motherboard
    Intel core-i7 CPU
    4Gb RAM
    120Gb SSD

When I started out, the restricted/additional drivers tool came back blank, so I proceeded with a manual install as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

Although the screen goes blank, it remains active as though there's some signal.

I tried restoring the default nvidia modules, in case removing them had corrupted something. Having done this, the behaviour remains the same. When I restart, the machine boots straight through to the GUI with the default display drivers.

    Any ideas appreciated.

I've now re-installed with 8.04 and the nvidia manual install has worked fine, so that means it's not a hardware fault.

I still need this to work on 10.04, because of another hardware dependancy, so please help.
