    Unhappy Missing Gnome..

I have to say, since 12.04 came out, I have been very frustrated with all that has been lost, in my opinion, with the old school desktop environments gone. I have, for the most part, been able to load gnome on my install and, revert back to an environment that I liked a lot more than the "unity glossy look".

However, I am still having issues that I do not enjoy on my install. I have been doing some thinking and looking around for what version I could revert back to and, have the full blown Gnome desktop environment still default on my install and, it looks like I have to go all the way back to 8.04. That's a few versions back which, I am willing to do but, I was wondering how long it is supported for. IE: How long will I be able to get updates on it.

If this version is not supported any longer, what are my other options? I am done messing with 12.04 and, I just need a viable version I can downgrade to or, go to another distro which, I really don't wanna do.

I appreciate any input on this.

    Thanks,
    netgooroo

What's wrong with trying various distros on live discs?

I recommend you stay with 12.04 and install gnome fallback desktop: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859961

Did that, still not what I want,

On the live disk suggestion, I downloaded Debian which is what Ubuntu was originally built on so, may be switching over to that. I have run it a few times andm I like the minimulist feel that it has.

    Thanks guys for the suggestions.

    I shared your pain!

    Then I installed cinnamon!

It's just like the 10.04 but a bit better. I highly recommend it to anyone who liked Gnome2!

The settings are accessed via the little arrow by the clock and allows for you to easily move the panel bar to the top of the screen and select what side you want your close/maximize buttons on

Whats wrong with 10o4? Its supported till next year. And I am planning to switch to the server kernel and hope to get a couple of more years out of it (with at least kernel updates).

This is basically the same discussion that has been going on since the release of 11.04. There are many people that just don't like change. Yes 10.04 was a very good release; in fact I am still running it on my server, but time marches on. I started using Unity with the release of 11.04 and now that I am using 12.04 I really like it and do not miss Gnome 2.X. (By the way I think Unity is better then Gnome 3).
All I can say, "Isn't it great that we have so many things to choose from." Different strokes for different folks.

Have you seen Mark Shuttleworth's latest blog?

Note what he said in reply to this statement,

I can’t believe you just changed Ubuntu. I liked it the way it was.

Looks like those six months are nearly up again

Yes, it is that time again, folks. You would think that we had to buy Ubuntu.
