    Ubuntu and Silverlight

I was wondering if there is any version of Silverlight that works on Ubuntu. I'd like to be able to watch Netflix on the computers I install Ubuntu on.
If Silverlight is officially supported by Microsoft for Linux, how do I install it?

Netflix does not work on Linux yet. Final verdict.

Silverlight on linux is called Moonlight and it is created by Novell. You can get it here. http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/

It works more or less, depending on where you use it and for what.

i don't think it'll work, afaik moonlight lacks the neccessary bits to do DRM.

Oh yeah, it definitely won't run Netflix.

Moonlight (and Silverlight) are both just rubbish in general.

    +1!
Moonlight isn't any longer under development too since the development of html5.

It's not updated for a long time since the FAQ still speaks about FF 3.x and 4.x:
Moonlight should work on any modern 32bit and 64bit Linux distributions under Firefox versions 3.0 through 4.x
And Mozilla is at version 15.x!

They even mention an older Ubuntu version....

Take it from someone who has tried many tedious methods, Netflix wont run on Ubuntu.
In the future perhaps when UbuntuTV comes out, Canonical will convince Netflix to work with them and make an UbuntuTV app which would probably work on normal Ubuntu, the other possibility is Netflix will eventually use html5 instead of stupid Microsoft plugins and then we will be able to run it in firefox or chromium, these are just hopes and dreams really but maybe someday.....

    Re: Ubuntu and Silverlight

I read somewhere that the CEO of Netflix is on the board of Microsoft. Maybe that is why Netfix went with Silverlight. I hope Netflix (and other companies) let people access their products using free software.

There are alternatives to Netflix. You can find useful alternative suggestions at:

    alternativeto
    Linux-libre ask for it
Coreboot Free software to replace proprietary BIOS
Trisquel a fully free GNU/Linux-libre distribution
