Don't close threads, based strictly on age, please

@ admin: the recently closed jackd topic is beneficial for new or frustrated users, and devs,
to read and air opinions, and get input, it is not irrelevant just because it was started 13 months ago.
    The issues are ongoing,
and solutions are not yet widely understood, and not
likely to be universal across various distros.
If the linux community wears too thin a skin, when mac or
windows users are not instant drooling converts, we will
fall short in contemplating and criticizing our own shortcomings,
and that will not enhance linux, nor strengthen the userbase.

Linux users and admins can choose between solitaire, and football.
Solitary bordom, or taking our share of bruises and cuts with the big boys.

    Cheers

I may be wrong, but sometimes it seems like the age of a thread is used as convenient way to shut it down for other reasons.

I get why thread necromancy is frowned upon in some cases as information becomes outdated, but in cases of continuing debate and discussion it really seems pointless to shut it don on the grounds of age.

    Cheers

If the thread in question was such a useful thread there would not have been a gap of a whole year.

What exactly is the issue with thread revival? I think the anti-Necro rules probably were invented by a mislead forum mod in some random forum of the first ones and then admins everywhere copied the rules from other forums and kept applying it without really putting a lot of thought into it.

The truth is that the OP wants to start the same thread again, he would be able to, and the discussion will go on. Except that old replies would not be visible and thus people will say exactly the same things again...

The reason for thread closure, is in many cases the information contained in the thread is no longer valid, and with a new release every six months information and howto's become obsolete very quickly.

Your second point is true of original threads too, most people don't bother to read long threads from the start and the same information ends up getting posted several times.

I think a new updated thread with a link to the old one would be more useful. With the old thread locked it will keep the topic in the new updated one.

Hi, in this case, the ongoing issues of jackd compatibility,
transcend the very modest timelime of that thread.
Jackd usage has always inspired a large number of queries,
especially with new release candidates that arrive with significant issues. A little more effort put into pro audio prior to release,
would have gone a long long way, to Ubuntu uptake among musicians.
Windows 8 is getting heavily mixed reviews, so now is a good time
for linux users to discuss and showcase the excellent gui, file management, and cpu/disk efficiency, that musicians long for.
Closing and moving threads is not always in our best interest.
I am a guest, so I'll just waddle over to the bar, and have
another cold one, on the house, before the party is over.

Perhaps that's why our Code of Conduct contains the section:
If a post is older than a year or so and hasn't had a new reply in that time, instead of replying to it, create a new thread. In the software world, a lot can change in a very short time, and doing things this way makes it more likely that you will find the best information. You may link to the original discussion in the new thread if you think it may be helpful.

There is a slogan from sports coverage, 'no harm, no foul'.
Fans prefer not interrupting the game for
trivial rules violations, that did not adversely effect the
outcome of the play, or the game.
    Cheers
