Lightbulb Cheapest way to connect my laptop wirelessly to an amplifier(the guitar kinds))

    That about says it all.

I have an old(but solid!) guitar amplifier that I use to listen to music from my laptop using a 1/4 Inch Stereo Jack To 3.5Mm Stereo Adapter(one of these things). But since the wire is lofty and connects through the front of the laptop, it has great effects on portability and usability of the laptop.

The idea is to have my laptop connect to the amplifier wirelessly, over any type of connection, bluetooth, wifi, whatever, and to do this in the simplest way possible.

What I'm thinking along the lines of and hoping to achieve is this:-
    [laptop]--[d1]))))[d2]--[amplifier]
The laptop runs 10.04. And I'm a bit of a noob, so point me as you would face if you were in my shoes.

I know about the wireless stereos, and where that might eventually be an option, I'd like to first consider anything that can be done DIY. Cheers!

Hi, I saw your post earlier but noticed you had already considered using a wireless stereo adapter, maybe of the type that can connect a personal MP3 player to a pair of remote speakers. I expect the price new will vary, but I have seen ones at just under 30 GB pounds that ought to be suitable. Looks like they have a 3.5 mm jack to plug into the headphone socket of the MP3 player at the transmitter end.

If a new unit works out at more than you wanted to spend, I expect there would be plenty of second hand ones out there that you could adapt to your needs, in which case I doubt that you could save very much more by any sort of DIY approach.

As for Ubuntu, I am very new to it within the last couple of weeks, but I understand the need to have driver support for any hardware that connects to the system. You drew a diagram suggesting in effect a point to point wireless link to replace the lead that you are currently using, and this general approach has the advantage of avoiding any such issues.

But I like you would be interested to hear of any other solutions that would be better .

Whatever you eventually decide, I hope it works out well for you.

    Regards

    Stephen

    Hey Stephen,

Thanks for your post. Yea, I have considered that... but i'm not highly keen on getting some specialised piece of hardware.I'm not broke or anything. I just wanna see how far I can keep this from becoming a luxury.. I like living in a scrap yard.. if you know what i mean.

Could you maybe link me to such a product on the net some place? I havent been able to find any device which does that here without having to buy the remote speakers as well.. and then too the transmitter's specifically for those speakers.

Good point, yes.. There's more things that DIY can best applied to.

This was the sort of thing I had in mind, Audiomate AM8112.

    http://www.audiomate.com.au/products.html

I remember seing some less expensive units doing much the same thing, (I should have remembered to bookmark the page). A bit of shopping around though or second hand units ought to get the price down to something reasonable.

    Best wishes
