    Login screen changes

    Using Ubuntu 12.04.
    I would like to understand how to change the login screen settings without using some specialised app'/tweak tool.

    Where are the background picture, sound and login files stored?
    How does Ubuntu call them at startup?

    Any additional information would also be appreciated.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

    I can see /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png points to the background file which is just what I wanted to know (thanks again).

    Can you offer further assistance?
    Do you know where the startup audio file is held (the little drum roll after the page loads)? From where (which file) are these files called?
    As you have probably gathered, I'm quite new to Ubuntu, so I hope you'll forgive any questions that seem to be obvious. It appears that Ubuntu uses the boot-loader Grub? I've just found a Grub tutorial, so I'll start reading.

    It's Grub2, just in case you didn't know.

    Yup - I tried reading through a few of Grub 2 tutorials found on the web - I should imagine that wading through treacle would be easier!, I have not found any easy explanation for newbies.

    I thought that the questions I raised were so simple that I was almost too embarrassed to ask.

    Just want to know where the display/audio files are, and which file/s call them, I didn't expect this to be difficult - Oh the joys of computing :-}
