Fan Behaviour under Ubuntu on Asus Aspire One series (722, 725 and 756)

    Hi,
i would like to buy one acer aspire one, but i am very sceptic on fan behaviour. I had before 2 years some 10" modells but their fan was very loud. So, if someone here can post his/her experience with the fan loudness at lowest speed, i would be very grateful.

I am interested in these three modells:

    Acer Aspire One 722 (AMD C-60, 2x 1.00GHz)
    Acer Aspire One 725 (AMD C-60, 2x 1.00GHz)
    Acer Aspire One 725 (Intel Celeron 877, 2x 1.40GHz)

P.S. I had e.g. Thinkpad X200 and HP 2510p and they had very silent fan at speed one...

I've been using the 756 on the road for more than a week, and I have had no problem with noise. I also did a battery test (see below for noise), running xubuntu 12.04:

    * First I install jupiter to control CPU
    * then I set the CPU to performance (both core running at 1.4G) for 20 min, running full-screen flash video from youtube
    * then I set the CPU to on demand for about 20 min, looping video playing using VLC (I don't remember if it's a 360p or 480p video)
    * finally I set the CPU to power saving (both core running at 800Mhz) and loop the same video
    * wifi on during the entire time; screen set at second-lowest level (which I find very adequate unless sitting outdoor -- I'm typing this indoor, seating next to a window on a very sunny day)

With this setup, I got about 4hr15min before the battery hits 10%, at which point I stopped. During the final (longest) stage of the test, with the CPU at power saving mode the machine is barely luke warm and I couldn't hear the fan unless I put my ear next to the vent -- DISCLAIMER: I don't have perfect ears!

You might want want to visit amazon.com and check out the user reviews for the ao756 -- one of the reviews there has over 600 replies (!), all very positive and touch on different aspects of 756, including battery life. Most of the users there of course use window, but as I recall there is no complain about fan noise, and they have similar battery life under power saving mode. Check it out! (of course, YMMV )

Good luck! And if you do get an 756, please share your experience and tweaks!

p.s. I would not recommand the AMD-based aspire one, unless you really need the battery life (in which case you might want to get an extra battery instead). The 756 is so much more powerful; it can handle pretty much very thing I throw at it, except for big computations (I don't game).

Thanks for your answer-glad to have something to begin with. Well i want to buy ao756 with Celeron, but also other Modells are for me interested. So, hopefully ubuntu works ootb on that machine. I have nothing against Windows, but in last few years i just lost the touch with them.
I need this computer mostly for Office Apps-OpenOffice, PDF Reader and Web Browser.
But this fan issue is very important to me.

One question though-i couldn´t find those model with 600 replies-could you send me Link?

    Thanks!

I own an Acer Aspire One 722-0369 and I like it quite well- I'm still working with the sound, but otherwise performance is great and fan noise is non-existent.
Of course, I put an SSD in mine too...

For your usage (similar to mine) I highly recommend 756 over the AMD-based models (again assuming that you don't the extra hour or so battery life).

It just hits 700 replies! This model really is quite popular, even though it has not (yet) been reviewed by any of the major blogs/sites (weird): http://www.amazon.com/review/R3QX0U4...R3QX0U4MCIE613 Good luck, and let us know how things turn out!

    Thanks for replies!
I will go today to see how does look any of this model-if available somewhere in Austria.
Other than that-i am also very interested at LG P210, but it costs almost 180 EUR more than AO756, and not sure if it´s worth it.

One more question though-the AO756 has chiclet keyboard and AO722 not. I like the chiclet keyboard (mac user ), but is it really better than the keyboard form AO722?

And one more question-there is one modell of Aspire One 756 with Celeron 847 (1,1 Ghz) - i like this modell because it has non-glare display. Would there be big difference between Celeron 877 and Celeron 847?

I'm using AO722 since ubuntu 12.04, now 13.04. The battery is a little worse than Windows (getting almost 5 hours in Windows but only ~4 hours in Ubuntu) and fan is audible when you watch video.
About Celeron 877, i guess it would make a small difference in performance (~10-15%) over 847.
