    Intel HD4000 and 12.04

Has anyone tried using the Ivy Bridge Intel CPUs with the HD4000 GPU built in on 12.04?

I am planning to add 4 more systems to my 'Folding at Home' TeamUbuntu server farm, and I have the option to install Ivy Bridge based i7 chips instead of the Sandy Bridge i7 CPUs I have already installed in my first 5 system in the farm.

I know the HD3000 of the sandy bridge i7 is working happily; but having the option of the HD4000 in case these units become workstations someday would be nice.

Has anyone had sccuess with the HD4000 and 12.04?

    Thanks!

p.s. TeamUbuntu will be moving up in the FAH team stats two positions in the next 24 hours - a total for four positions up in the last week. Way to go TeamUbuntu! TeamUbuntu Stats

That may be what System 76 is currently using, if so you might check that sub-forum

Thanks mc4man - That laptop is offering HD4000 with 12.04. So I guess I am golden on doing the same with my little server farm, too.

OK - Silly link to a photo of the server farm (notice the open spots for 4 more units!).

p.s. These boot from a USB stick - no hard drive required!

    Some info here:

Generally it seems to work well, but his other blog posts say Intel is still making improvements to drivers.

I continue to be amazed at all the stuff you know, oldfred. Thanks for the reference/link.

The article specifically mentions Ubuntu 12.04 as the best tested platform. It also indicates that BSD and Solaris were still struggling with drivers for Ivy Bridge.

Another reason to use Ubuntu - its popularity means more support (or at least support sooner).

    Thanks ever so!

    Glad I could help.

I am thinking of a new system which would be Ivy Bridge, so I am following info on that.

I have ordered an ivy bridge i7-3770K for my next unit; i expect to get it assembled mid week. I will try a few games (like Oil Rush) and see how well it does before it gets assigned 'server farm' duty.

I will let you know how it goes compares to the HD3000 i7-2700K.

I know it won't outperform my massive nVidia card in my main Ubuntu system, but I do expect it to be playable (the HD3000 is laggy in Linux on that game, and not really playable on my HD3000 based Mac Mini).

I use the Mac for OSX development work I have to do now and again - still prefer Ubuntu overall.
