Sound playing on both speakers and earphones when earphones are plugged in

Hi all
I'm running 12.04 on my laptop. Its new, the model is HP-dv6-6c15nr. But i'm having a problem with sound, everytime i play song, video with my earphones plugged in, the sound comes from both the laptop speakers and my earphones.
Please assist.

I used to have that problem with 8.04, and I never did find the solution. It magically disappeared when I installed 10.04.

Did you upgrade to 12.04 or was it a fresh installation?
