What is an alternative to Audacity?

This has been asked before (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1027477), but I was explicitly told to start a new thread by a moderator, so um, yeah.

    Open a terminal, type:

    audacity

When it crashes, check the terminal and post back the error it's throwing.

And this is an alternative to audacity how?

UPDATE: BTW, not a bad suggestion, it's just I want people in the future searching for alternatives to actually find a valid list, if such a list exists.

The ability to chop "ums" and such out of netcasts. The ability to export to flac, ogg and mp3. The ability to edit the metadata of the file.

Past that, I'm not real sure.

I know there's ardour, but I think that's too complicated for my purposes.

Interesting that Audacity is so horrible for you. I hope it's not reflective of something wrong with your system.

If you don't mind my saying so, your original post opened the door to people wanting to help you fix any issues you have with Audacity.

If you just wanted a list of alternatives, the part about "Audacity crashes all the time. It's super-irritating." would appear unnecessary.

Re: What is an alternative to Audacity?

ok DouglasAWh let us be honest about this

there is no real alternative to Audacity

it does editing sound files easier than anyone else

so i would suggest fixing it on your system

most of the time it works as it is meant to so if you have bits and pieces missing maybe go that route

sox and ffmpeg from commandline might/will do all it does i guess but huge learning curve && will always be clumsier

so i back Bucky Ball's suggestion

show the guys what is missing and mayhaps get it fixed

Audacity is like a main organ for sound.... cant really live without it
    Linux is Latin for off-the-beaten-track
