which company has teh best record?

If I were to buy a new laptop is there a company that has the best track record for running with linux?

Is the main concern just the graphics card?

IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad... that is my most unbiased answer...

I think is also one of the few brands that has full BIOS options to let you choose NVIDIA Optimus settings in a variety of combination (with and without Bumblebee). One can make full use of the Nvidia GPU all the times.

EDIT: best series of all, T4xx

In my experience, the Thinkpad line has the best Ubuntu support. You are correct in saying that the graphics card is the main concern, though, in most cases. A Thinkpad with Intel graphics is the best bet at this current time. Hopefully, with Steam coming to Linux graphics card vendors will make better proprietary drivers or contribute to open drivers.

Lenovo has a good record and they allow Optimus to be tamed...

However, I recently made a purchase and despite being a loyal Lenovo fan over the past decade or so I went with a System76 laptop. The core reason for looking at their stuff was supporting a company that actually sells the device with Ubuntu installed. When I did the research though it became apparent they are selling quality machines.

In the end the value I was getting from System76 far exceeded what Lenovo was bringing to the table. (Lenovo = $2589 vs System76 $1352). You can read my other post on the subject for a bit more detail on the specific hardware involved.

After placing the order I was amazed at the customer service (example below

Seriously... most companies are all friendly up until they process your credit card... System76 has been friendly before and after.

In the end you have to look for the features you want and then narrow it down by compatibility with the current kernel (and hopefully future kernels).

I really wanted a nice LCD panel (1920x1080 - FHD) and the System76 panel I chose is the 95% gamut version.

    I hope this helps.
