    Java install

I tried to install Java plugin with:
    sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

    and get

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
sun-java6-plugin : Depends: xulrunner-1.9 but it is not installable
    E: Broken packages

Tried fixing broken packages thru Synaptic, but does nothing.

I've been searching the net for days trying to get Java done to no avail.

Re: Java install been working on it for two days now! Help!

Sun Java is now owned by Oracle. It is no longer in the Ubuntu repositories. Here is a link to one guide to installing Oracle Java

    http://www.webupd8.org/2011/09/how-t...-7-jdk-in.html
Break it, fix it, learn something.
People who never make mistakes seldom make anything!

Re: Java install been working on it for two days now! Help!

Check the permissions of /usr/bin/java - it could be that the execution bit is not set. I don't know a thing about java so I don't know what it should look like.

    Re: Java install

    Did:

    dave@ubuntu-desktop:~$ sudo ls -l /usr/bin/java
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2012-08-01 04:14 /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java

    is this right?

If I use the file manager or gedit it shows me /usr/bin/java folder doesn't exist.

    So I tried:

    mkdir /usr/bin/java
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/bin/java': File exists

A java file is in /usr/bin but not a directory, I was thinking I could just copy the jar.binfmt file into it.

Now totally confused, I'm a noob of coarse so that is easy to do,but have learned alot about Linux with all the problems I've had

The easy way to install Oracle Java:
    Code:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

    Unhappy Re: Java install

Tried what you said again about permissions, been looking at a book:

    dave@ubuntu-desktop:~$ ls -ld /usr/bin/java/
ls: cannot access /usr/bin/java/: Not a directory

    Re: Java install

    Hello, virgodave61.

About the file /usr/bin/java, a symlink as a matter of fact:

    Code:
    karl@pangolin:/usr/bin$ ls -al java
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Jul 28 20:14 java -> /etc/alternatives/java
OK, so let us check /etc/alternatives/java.
    Code:
    karl@pangolin:/usr/bin$ ls -al /etc/alternatives/java
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Jul 28 20:14 /etc/alternatives/java -> /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_33/bin/java
Yet, another symlink pointing to /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_33/bin/java.

This path will look differently if you have installed Java 7.

    The crucial thing is
    Code:
    java -version
    java version "1.6.0_33"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_33-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 20.8-b03, mixed mode)
should simply work and return the installed Java version. 1.6.0_33 in my case, 7-something in your case.

Similarly, visiting this webpage, Verified Java Version and clicking on the button [Verify Java Version] should take a while and then display the confirmation that you have the recommended Java version installed.

    Kind regards,
    Karl

    Re: Java install

    Thanks,
I will have to wait a few minutes, I'm trying Cheesemill's suggestion, terminal is running sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java at the moment

    Now running sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer is running.

OMG I'm so F'in happy check this out!

    Code:
    dave@ubuntu-desktop:~$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_05-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 23.1-b03, mixed mode)
    dave@ubuntu-desktop:~$ javac -version
    javac 1.7.0_05
Went to test Java page and it says Java is working !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for there help, esp. Cheesemill for a way that works, and to Karlchen for forcing me to learn what symlink's are!

    You guys are awesome!

    Re: Java install

I'm having trouble enabling Java. (And it had been working fine up until recently, so I'm not sure what happened.)

When I type ~$ java -version, I get:

    java version "1.7.0_03"
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1.1pre) (7~u3-2.1.1~pre1-1ubuntu3)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode)

In both my browsers (Chromium and Firefox) I have IceTea-Web plugin enabled.

When I go to the Java test page, I just get blank white space where the applet should be (ditto with the NY Times crossword applet, which is my main concern). If I disable IceTea, I get the puzzle piece icon (and grey box where the applet is) telling me the plug-in is disabled.

    What am I missing?
