Use XFCE, not MATE. XFCE is currently up to date software with lots of developer support.

MATE is just flogging a dead horse...

As others have said, MATE or Cinnamon are both options. Linux Mint has download options for both.

The problem is that XFCE lacks significant features of Gnome 2. It is, perhaps, the best DE available after the Gnome 3 debacle, but it's still a fair bit clunkier than Gnome 2. So for people who want those features, it's pretty much MATE or nothing.

Gnome 3 itself may still briefly be in the running, depending on how much fallback mode has improved since I last tried it, but this thread makes it look like it won't be in the running for long.

What features is Xfce missing that Gnome 2 had? Most of the Gnome applications work just fine under Xfce, so I fail to see what you could be missing. I also find that Xfce and its window manager (Xfwm) is far more configurable than Gnome 2 ever was, and even has a built in compositor.
    Do you folks like coffee?

Where's the OP gone to? Should someone be worried?
Users can easily damage their systems by using sudo su if they aren't experienced enough.

Solus Os2 (about to go into beta stages) Ikey (the lead developer) is taking gnome 3 and putting back all the gnome 2 functionality into it

I'm just messing with you, use MATE or move on.

mint 13 with cinnamin is what Iam using now its a great distro nice simple to use desktop. Mate is also a good choice and its not flogging a dead horse that total rubbish! mate will be around quite awhile, mint has said as much. Both of those are as close at the old gnome as you are going to get. If you have any questions the mint forum is a great place to ask questions.

    Can we save Gnome 2?
No... the Gnome developers have been trying for years to save Gnome 2, but in the end it was too inflexible to be retrofitted with the newest features to make life easier. So they binned it and moved to Gnome 3.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
