I'm not certain whether this is an issue with Ubuntu or with my computer, but I'm hoping someone can help me with it.
I have a few separate but, I suspect, related problems.
The most important two: my computer seems to be heating up faster than normal and the processor is running at one third speed.
Regarding the processor: I initially thought the processor slowed down because the computer was just running too hot, and I still think they're related. However, even when my laptop is running at pretty normal temperatures (50 or 60 odd degrees celsius, and I am checking it constantly) the processor slows down from 2400 to 800 megahertz (as indicated by lscpu).
Regarding the temperature: it overheated a LOT last night - it was running at 70 odd degrees for fairly light activity (web browsing and such) and 80 odd degrees at times. I thought it may have gone over 90 at some point (I initially thought so because the processor slowed down) but now I'm not sure since the processor seems happy to slow down at 50. I'm checking constantly and getting paranoid every time it goes over 60 (should it be doing that for typical web browsing? I'm not sure). Sitting at 57 degrees celsius as of this post. I have a usb cooling pad underneath it right now though. However, this morning before I started using that it was still in the 50s and 60s.
I'm also encountering some general performance issues (things are moving a bit slower, umplayer apparently won't play any videos, system monitor won't close or takes so long to close I'm inclined to just end the process) most of which can probably be attributed to the dramatically slowed processor speed.
Some relevant info about my system:
I'm running an Acer Aspire 5252-V662 laptop. My processor is an AMD V160 with one core and (usually) 2.4ghz of speed. I've had the laptop for a year and I'm not certain how many months, but I think less than a year and a half. It's been extremely heavily used in that time, though.
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 built up from a minimal install and primarily using the Enlightenment window manager/desktop environment. However, using XFCE doesn't seem to affect this issue. I got Ubuntu 12.04 a few days after it was officially released and this problem only started (that I noticed) yesterday.
