Suggest you use the Synaptic package manager under administration to install Samba, Sambafs and Nautilus (if not already installed). You will be given some suggestion for other items to install; use judgment to decide if the make sense.

I strongly suggest you also install Webmin as I used this to configure the shares (under the servers link) I wanted to show to Windows. You may need to use a terminal window to set the Samba password if you are using a different user or want a different password for network access.

No manual editing of the smb.conf file is necessary with this tool.

Just access network neighborhood from windows and enter login/password for samba when prompted.

    Cheers

Awesome tutorial, but I'm having one little issue
I can't see any files shared on my windows computer from Ubuntu but i can see the files i shared from Ubuntu on my windows computer. I deactivated any kind of firewall, I tried deactivating sharing to a partition then sharing it again but I still can't see anything on Ubuntu. Any idea why?

I read this and it seems like alot of work. Put simply, it's alot easier to do in Windows.

OK, at last I found my problem!

I had specified both group and user in smb.conf, which worked nicely in Gutsy and earlier. When I removed group, it worked perfectly again. Yay!

Now, I only have to make this change on 12 other machines as well. Yay...

i still clearly remember the first time i tried to set up a share between two windows computers. it took me more than a week to figure everything out, and still regularly had problems when windows update came around.

took me about the same amount of time to figure out how to set up shares in ubuntu. and once i set everything up, i never had to touch it again.

now that i know how to set things up, i can do both equally quickly. sometimes ubuntu is much faster because it doesn't need to reboot in order to change the workgroup or netbios name.

different? yes. easier? not necessarily. please remember to keep in mind how much time you've spent learning how to make windows work, compared to how much time you've spent learning how to make linux work.
