Well, ok... So I uninstalled firefox32, and then ran the automated
script to reinstall, as you suggested. I now still have 64-bit firefox
(1.5.0.5, though) with the java plugin successfully installed, and whose
menus all appear to be working properly. However, when run from the
terminal it complains as follows:
Code:
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
[/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory]
The file it complains of not being able to find seems to be right where
it belongs:
Code:
boomer@gobstopper:~/Desktop$ ll
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 213016 2005-09-19 13:44
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
I also now have firefox32 (1.5.0.6), with apparently both the java and
the flashplayer plugins installed, but whose File/File Open and Save
Page As dialog boxes are screwed up, showing only empty character
squares in place of letters. It also generates the following error
message on starting, which you said it was ok to ignore,
I remember:
Code:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD
cannot be preloaded: ignored.
When I then attempt to use either the File Open or Save Page As dialogs,
I also get the following errors, in addition to unusable dialog boxes:
Code:
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-WARNING **:
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

Yet the file 'pango-basic-fc.so' DOES exist, though apparently both in /usr/lib AND in /usr/lib32:
Code:
boomer@gobstopper:~/Desktop$ locate pango-basic
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.so
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.la
/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.la
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.so
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so
/usr/lib32/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-x.so
/usr/lib32/pango/1.5.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so
And finally:
Code:
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-CRITICAL **:
_pango_cairo_font_map_get_renderer: assertion `PANGO_IS_CAIRO_FONT_MAP
(fontmap)' failed
(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-WARNING **: pango_font_get_metrics called

(firefox-bin:22394): Pango-CRITICAL **:

I suppose I could just give up on using firefox32, but I have the
feeling that this pango error, if that is what it is, might be easily
solved by a tweak or two... As always, any help is appreciated.
