What exception to mmdevapi? What if you just remove it..
@vladdy
Sorry if that doesn't notify you, I'm unsure if markup works in here.
I tried to use wine out of the box, and it didn't work. Then I added mmdevapi and disabled it, following instructions I saw on tutorials. Neither has improved the sound. I'm currently using wine 1.5.9
Just to update, I was on the winehq IRC channel, and the member there pointed out that I don't have a driver listed in the Audio settings- there should be a file called winealsa.drv but I have none.
Looking at my wine regedit
and there were a number of folders missing- under HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Wine all I have listed are AppDefaults, Debug, Dlloverrides, FileOpenAssociations, Fonts, MenuFiles, MSHTML, and Temporary System parameters
I used this link they provided me to see that I'm missing a lot of things. Not really wanting to edit it myself until I've spoken to someone about it more though.

Remove the mmdevapi override, it is now harmful to keep it.
Ok, done- why is that?
