Unhappy IBM ThinkPad T42 (2373-JXU) w/ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 - *slow video performance*

Got an IBM ThinkPad T42 for $45 awhile back and have been using it with Ubuntu all the while. Recently, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and noticed the video and 3D performance were much better under Windows than Ubuntu. Some examples include Minecraft running at 30 fps in Windows compared to 10 in Ubuntu, and YouTube videos running very smoothly in Windows, even full screen.

This 1400x1050 flexview IPS display deserves more giddy up!

Any tweaks I can do in 12.04 to help it out? Thanks!

use a different DE that doesn't waste your cards resources on preety windows effects? you are stuck with opensource ATI drivers which don't always do so well. in windows 7 driver are likely provided by ATI, right? are they?
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla
